Library 2.0 Tours New Hampshire

I was happy today to speak to a fabulous group of New Hampshire librarians interested in social software and Web2.0. Their questions, interest, and commitment to improving library services always impressed me and am I’m really looking forward to the projects they initiate.
Tomorrow, I’ll repeat the process at the Laconia Public Library. And, it’s Laconia Bike Week (I did not plan it), so I’m excited for the ride too. I am speaking without slides just a few notes and a list of links that I’m providing for attendees, find the list below:

Tech Trends in Libraries by Jessamyn West:
The public is getting used to having greater degrees of interaction with their institutions via technology. The technology allows libraries to do more outreach to more people without much more in the way of resources.
Web 2.0 facilitates people asking each other questions, so they no longer have to go to you. BUT, you can be where they are with these tools.

[...] I visited the Laconia Library in July of 2005 when they were in the middle of a renovation project. I had the good fortune to return almost exactly a year later to find an incredible library transformation. The new space is functional, inviting, warm, appropriate, and in-keeping with the character of the building. Their new Children’s Room is in the former basement and, to me, is the crowning jewel. A mural of nearby lake Lake Winnipesaukee. It’s filled with light and fun and a play sailboat donated to the library by the sailing club. It’s everything that libraries should be and Laconia should be very proud. Now that their physical plant is well established as a place to be in the community, I’m looking forward to seeing them blogging, flickring, and chatting soon too! [...]

[...] I’ve seen few wiki implementations that exist to directly reach patrons so I’m generally quiet about wikis. It’s an emerging technology that I just can’t get that jazzed about, well, except for the obvious, but wikiHow is an exception. [...]

I think its great that libraries are blogging and chatting and interacting with their patrons through the internet. It’s free, its fast, its effective, so why not?
