Ten dollars short

Update: Sample records are now a .zip file and are working.

Note: Cross-posted at Scriblio.

Yes, I know, I promised it ten days and a whole release ago, but you can stop holding your breath. I present the new* Scriblio for Wordpress 2.3.1 installation instructions:

1. Be sure your Apache installation has mod_rewrite enabled.
2. Download and install Wordpress 2.3.1
3. Set your permalinks. Do this through Options -> Permalinks; personally, I like Numeric. When you save, pay attention to the prompt regarding the .htaccess file - if it says that you must update it yourself, do so! (this may mean you have to create it.) If it says it’s been updated, you’re good.
4. Be sure your wp-content folder is web-writable.
5. It’ll be easier for you to switch to the Classic Theme instead of the Default theme.
6. Download bsuite_core and place it in your wp-content/plugins/ folder. Then enable it in your blog’s dashboard -> Plugins.
7. Download the Scriblio plugin. I recommend getting the files from the svn depository, either by installing Subversion or by copying all the files in the trunk into a scriblio folder in your plugins folder. If you go this route, be sure to get them all including the import directory and all its contents.
8. Activate the Scriblio plugin and the Scriblio Catalog Importer. And the Scriblio III Catalog Importer, if you choose. I’m going to continue these instructions with the Scriblio Catalog Importer alone.
9. Time to import some records. Choose the Scriblio Catalog Importer in Manage -> Import. And follow the instructions. [If you don't have any on hand, you can try it with mine.]
10. If the records import and harvest with no problems, go to Presentation -> Widgets.
11. This is all customizable, but for demonstration, scroll to the very bottom and choose five or so Scriblio facets.
12. Drag the Search, Scrib Search Editor, Scrib Scope Selector, Scrib Spelling, and a few Scrib Facets into the sidebar.
11. Fill in the text boxes of the Search Editor, Scrib Spelling, and Scope Selector. You can see what facets are available to you in the Options -> Scriblio screen. Try auth in one, subj in one, format in another. Save.
12. Go to Options->Scriblio and Rebuild Spelling Table.
12. Save these and try some searches - you should see metadata in the sidebar.
13. Now play around with themes and widgets to customize.

Tried this on my test machine above, but could not activate the bsuite core plugin - got the following error:

Parse error: parse error, expecting `T_OLD_FUNCTION’ or `T_FUNCTION’ or `T_VAR’ or `’}” in /Library/WebServer/Documents/blog/wp-content/plugins/bsuite_core/core.php on line 75

Perhaps this is because my testing machine is a Macintosh instead of Linux?

Oh darn - fatal error trying to activate is on a wordpress 2.1.3 installation on a red hat linux machine as well, although that instance did not show me the detailed error message.

    Edward,

It should work on linux as long as the requirements are fulfilled: http://about.scriblio.net/download We’ve been seeing quite a few errors from people using php4 instead of php5 - it must be php5.

I’ll look into the other error.

    Helo:

I’ve gotten scriblio installed/configured on a WinXP box with WAMP. My problem comes with the Catalog Importer tool. I receive the warning (not error) “Invalid Record Length” for each of the records imported. Debug mode shows only one record and it looks normal.

Then, trying to publish those harvested records, I’ll either get 1 or no posts from them. Subsequent imports overwrite that one, although the post ID increments.

The marc files are an export of a Sirsi/Unicorn recordset, and I’m trying to use the LCCN as the source ID field. I’ve also tried a limited OCLC marc import, with the same results.

Does this have anything at all to do with my LCCN selection, my prefix assignment, or the files themselves? They look similar in content to your example file, which I have not tried, yet.

    Thanks
    Paul

  6. Danielle Cummins says:

I installed bsuite and scriblio fine and created my own catalog from MARC records I imported from LOC. I am doing this for a class project, so THANK YOU for creating this program.

The only problem I have encountered is that the subject and author links inside each record do not link anywhere. I get an Error 404-Not found.

The weird thing is that the subject and author links in the sidebar widgets work fine and sort my records accordingly.

I this a known problem? Can I fix it?

    Thank you for any help.

    -Danielle

  7. Agung says:

After trying upload your MARC data, the process can’t complete. Btw, I still don’t understand with your step from number 11 (Fill in the text boxes of the Search Editor, Scrib Spelling, and Scope Selector. You can see what facets are available to you in the Options -> Scriblio screen. Try auth in one, subj in one, format in another. Save.).

Can you explain more spesific? Because at my wordpress, I can’t find the text boxes.

    Thanks you

Paul, Danielle, and Agung! I’m sorry to have left your comments so long - I wasn’t receiving the notifications I usually do so I didn’t see them. I think I’ve fixed that problem now. Please let me know if you’ve solved the problems and if not, I’ll look into them.

    Many thanks.
    Lichen
