Chat Reference

Library Web Chic posted on Monday about letting people know, via website, that you're logged on to a chat client. I think this has brilliant applications for virtual reference. Especially for virtual reference in institutions like the UNH library who found that the cooperative, 24-7, bloated virtual reference endeavors did not pan out. The beautiful thing about the chat is it's casual, laid back nature- something most implimentations in libraries have ignored. There's no reason that chat reference should be different. Simply stick one of these jobbies on your reference department's 'get help' page- set the javascript to say whether there's a friendly librarian logged in and off we go. Golly, almost makes me want to go into reference…
