New search engine - Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Exalead reviewed in Search Engine Watch and it actually looks pretty good… good interface, nice features. I love the clustering, the page previews, and there's a fully interactive preview screen too. Proximity searching is an underappreciated feature. I'd be really really curious to hear what reference librarians think about it… hint hint.

Google Print and Small Libraries - Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Gary Price posted yesterday about copyright concerns and the Google Print project… Some Publishers Not Happy With Google's Library Digitization Program. This project has been discussed ad nauseum in library circles, of course, but there's one possible implication that I haven't heard about, what is the implication here for small libraries? I think [...]

Firefox start page - Saturday, May 21st, 2005

I'm sure this is old news to some, but I just downloaded the latest Firefox update and forgot to uncheck the “Use Firefox as my start page” at the end of the installation. So when I opened my browser, I get a Firefox branded Google search box. Yeah, I knew that Google bought [...]

Web site policy search - Friday, May 20th, 2005

Call to action! I'm working on a written policy for our website. It's grown pretty organically as I've developed it, but we need something we can point to as well as a division of responsibility. I'm concerned about format… is there an excepted format for such things? What is and what [...]

User tagging! - Friday, May 20th, 2005

User tagging is one of the most interesting internet developments to me AND the one I think librarians should be paying the most attention to. Tagging is natural-language searching is Google is the way people (read: civilians) want to search. Reading what non-information professionals say about information access is incredible… often the opposite [...]

Aggregators? - Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

Since I set this blog up to chronicle all online library explorations, it seems an appropriate place to note the afternoon's baffling activity: choosing an RSS aggregator to test. At first I couldn't figure out which to try, did a seach and settled on bloglines. As I was poised to register, it occured [...]

I'm back - Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

Sorry for the haitus. I had intended to put up a message but things got hairy near the end. I have just spent a week vacationing in Portland, Oregon- first time spending any real time in that part of the country and I found it delightful. I anticipated doing a lot of [...]

In defense of stupid users - Monday, May 9th, 2005

When I read Todd Miller's article: In Defense of Stupid Users in the March 15th issue of Library Journal I immediately made copies, distributed them to some of my colleagues, and hung one up next to my computer monitor. I was thrilled when someone brought it up on Web4Lib last week, generating far more [...]

Tagging - Thursday, May 5th, 2005

An interesting mainsteam article about tagging: http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/internet/05/03/social.tagging.ap/index.html
This is so interesting… I particulary like “Tagging is fundamentally about tapping the collective human wisdom, rather than relying on a computer algorithm, for search, said Ben Shneiderman, who teaches human-computer interaction at the University of Maryland.” What what? Librarians have been doing this forever… they're people too. [...]

Horsefeathers - Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

Look, even my favorite restaurant has a blog… is a blog…. Looks like a quick and easy way to have a dynamic, content-driven website. Could be quite the coup for small libraries with few resources… Not bad for Shrimp Salads either: http://hihowaya.blogs.com/
